Who provides water and sewer service in West Boca, the City or Palm Beach County?

Short answer

It depends on the address: the City of Boca Raton's Utility Services serves homes inside city limits and also portions of unincorporated Palm Beach County, while the Palm Beach County Water Utilities Department serves central and south-central unincorporated areas and the western communities. A West Boca address can therefore be on either system, so confirm the provider with the current utility bill or the utility itself before closing.

Why a West Boca home might get City of Boca Raton water

West Boca is unincorporated Palm Beach County, but water service areas do not follow city limits. The City of Boca Raton says its Utility Services Department serves residents within the city limits as well as portions of unincorporated Palm Beach County, and it publishes a service-area map.

Being a City of Boca Raton water customer does not make a property part of the city. Taxes, police, fire-rescue and building permits still follow the jurisdiction (city or county), not the water provider.[1][3]

Where the County utility takes over

The Palm Beach County Water Utilities Department (PBCWUD) describes its service area as the central and south-central unincorporated areas of the county and the western communities, serving about 641,000 residents with drinking water, wastewater and reclaimed water. Its customer guide lists a dedicated Boca Raton / South County customer service line.

New PBCWUD customers can open or move service by phone or at a customer service center; the department's guide lists a closing deed, settlement statement or signed lease as accepted proof of residency, and most new residential accounts pay a deposit and activation fee in advance.[2][4]

How to check a specific address (and sewer vs. septic)

The quickest check takes a few minutes and is worth doing before the inspection period ends.

  • Ask the seller for a recent water/sewer bill: the provider's name is on it.
  • Compare the address against the City of Boca Raton Utility Services service-area map, or call the provider directly.
  • Sewer or septic: the City says its Utility Services Engineering Department can tell you whether an address in its area is on sewer or a septic tank. Ask before you buy, since septic systems carry their own maintenance and inspection questions.
  • Separately, check the jurisdiction (city or county) with the City's residency lookup — it decides taxes and services, not the water bill.[1][3][4]
